  • Day 115 – Long Jump / Musings on Wide-Angle Shots

    ,

*Note: It is necessary to view the large version of today and yesterday’s photos to understand what I am talking about in this post. You can do so by clicking on the photos.

I use my wide-angle lens often, and almost always at the risk of taking too much in. The frame gets so many things in it that it becomes too busy. Therefore, I typically try to use it to get very close to my subjects, while still getting all the necessary components into the frame.

Yesterday, I tried something else. I used my wide-angle to try and capture the action and excitement of a track meet, where there is always something happening and never a dull moment. In the photo I posted yesterday, I put my wide-angle lens on and got as close to the water pit as I could, and tried to capture multiple stages at once: runners approaching the barrier, runners jumping over it, runners in the air, runners landing in the water, and runners exiting it and continuing on. Instead of taking multiple photos, I was able to get it all in with one shot.

I tried to do the same thing with the photo above, only there is just one athlete. By being able to see the approach, the sand pit, the sand raker, the ref, the stands, and part of the in-field, I think it tells a more complete story of what happens at a track meet in just one shot. I especially like the jumper’s shadow here. I know I risk having too much in the photo, but I think it works well in some situations. I think these track photos are one of those situations. I don’t plan to use this all the time, but I think it is a useful tool when one can pull it off.

What are your thoughts on this? Leave a comment.

  • Day 114 – Water Barrier

    ,

This is a shot of the water barrier in the steeplechase in the Gina Relays, which are going on this weekend at Hillsdale. I recommend you view this photo at a larger size by clicking on it.

The water on the other side (which starts deep and has a gradual slope, which rewards runners with better jumping abilities) had fish in it! Someone caught about 20 bluegill and bought some goldfish and had them swimming in here. It was quite amusing. For the record, all fish were still alive after this event.

By the way, it got up to 84 degrees today. The weather was beautiful!

    …and I got a 95% on a calc II exam I was worried about!

  • Day 113 – Overexposure

    ,

I took this shot for an art class last year in high school. I was dealing with ways of using overexposure and underexposure, and I liked the way the color faded in from the white. Click the photo to view it large.

  • Day 111 – Art Show Poster

    ,

Above is a poster for Hannah Stone, Jodi Olthouse, and Tricia Schoon’s senior art show coming up this weekend. I took the photo for them, but they made the poster. As always, click on it to view it larger.

  • Day 109 – Charger Baseball

    ,

Click the photo to view it large.

I am glad that the spring sports (baseball and outdoor track) are here, not because I enjoy watching them, but because I love taking photos of outdoor sports! Above is a shot of the Hillsdale Charger Baseball team taking on Saginaw Valley State on Saturday.

  • Day 108 – Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

    ,

As always, click on the photo to view it large.

Mu Alpha, a music honorary on campus, held their annual Ultimate Frisbee Tournament fundraiser today. Unfortunately, I had to finish up my volunteer hours this morning, so I didn’t join a team. I got back in time to take photos during the championship match, though.

I am going to work on a paper for a while, then spend a few hours at Dr. Stewart’s house for the Mu Alpha pig roast. It should be exciting! It is a beautiful 73 degrees and sunny outside.

  • Day 107 – Where I Want to Be

    ,

Click on the photo to view it large. Taken at Ft. Moultrie, SC. Pictured: Aaron Mortier

Today was beautiful! It was sunny with a light breeze and got up to almost 70 degrees. I had a two hour break between lunch and American Heritage, so I sat outside and read. It was wonderful. I also went out for ice cream with some of my friends after dinner, which was a lot of fun.

The end of the semester is coming up quickly, so the last round of exams before finals are coming through, as well as final papers. I am feeling somewhat overwhelmed by what I have to get done in the next week and a half, so like a good Hillsdale student I am spending my Friday night working in Lane Hall instead of relaxing or going to the SAI concert.

Tomorrow afternoon/evening I am going to a pig roast, so that should be fun. Perhaps I will take my camera along and shoot photos of people enjoying themselves. Then, I will put my camera down and enjoy myself, too.

  • Day 105 – Tower Players

I took this photo last night at a dress rehearsal of the Tower Players’ production of Six Characters in Search of an Author. Performances will be 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday.

In other news, anyone who makes an income in the United States knows today is Government Theft Day! (I made up that name, of course… for those who resent my constant jabs at the government, it is tax day.) In celebration of this day, I encourage you to read 94 Years of Serfdom by Paul Craig Roberts.

I came across a joke on David Friedman’s Blog this morning: “How to get smaller government: Move election day to April 15.”

  • Day 103 – Daffodils

    ,

Click on the photo to view it at a larger size (recommended).

This photo was taken at my aunt’s house in Wellington. I went outside and took photos to occupy myself after the pre-Easter dinner we had over there. I am back in Hillsdale now after a nice weekend at home. Hopefully spring is actually on its way now. The forecast says it is supposed to be in the 60s this week. I hope it is true! (Last week it was 20 degrees and snowing!)

  • Day 102 – Barn Fire, Take Two

    ,

Click on the photos to view them large; especially the first one. The sunlight shining through the smoke looks magnificent, and you can still see flames at the bottom.

The bottom two photos are members of the volunteer Amherst Fire Department.

In addition to being on the news, one of my photos was put in the Elyria Chronicle today!

  • Day 101 – Barn Fire

    ,

Click on the photos to view them large.

While my parents and I were driving home from my aunt’s house after an early Easter dinner, we spotted large billows of black smoke in the sky. We quickly figured out where it was, so we decided to drive by and see what was going on. Also, I had my camera with me, so I wanted to see if there were any photo opportunities.

It turned out that a barn on Dewey Road in Amherst was on fire, and we were on the scene before the fire department got there. In fact, we pulled up at the same time as the first policeman in the area did. I was able to get a few photos before the structure collapsed, then I got photos of the fire department preventing the flames from spreading after the barn did collapse. I will post a few photos tomorrow of the later stages of the fire, after it died down.

EDIT: Two of my photos were aired on Cleveland’s 19 Action News at 11 p.m. tonight!

  • Day 80 – End of Charleston Trip

    ,

We drove back to Hillsdale today. I will miss the sunny, warm weather and the exciting city of Charleston. I took the photo above on Thursday at the beach on the Isle of Palms, right outside of our hotel. Click on it to view it large. I had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the group of people that went. They made the experience even better. It is time, however, to get back to work at Hillsdale. We have only a little over a month left in the semester, but so much to do! I was able to get a decent amount of reading done during the ride there and back, but I still have to spend most of the day Sunday preparing for classes, which resume Monday.

I know I posted these links throughout the week, but here are the links to my photo galleries from the trip, all in one place:
    Day 1
    Day 2
    Day 3
    Day 4

  • Day 79 – Last Day in Charleston

    ,

The above photo is of Sarah and Kahryn climbing a tree at the Pickney site. Click the photo to view it large.

Today was our last day in Charleston. We are driving back to Hillsdale tomorrow (Saturday) morning. The trip was wonderful! I really liked the group of people that went, and I really liked Charleston.

We visited the Charles Pickney Historical Site this morning and then went to Patriot’s Point for the afternoon. Patriot’s Point is home to an aircraft carrier, a submarine, a destroyer, and a Coast Guard cutter. We were able to tour everything except the destroyer. You can see my pictures in today’s photo gallery.

For dinner tonight, we went to Hyman’s Seafood for dinner. I was adventurous again and ordered seafood–part of my campaign to try new things. I ate snapper, oysters, and crabcake. For those of you who don’t know, I have not eaten any kind of fish or seafood since I was little, and the smell of it usually makes me gag. I wanted to give it a chance this trip, so I ate mahi-mahi yesterday and the above-mentioned things today. It turns out that I can tolerate and actually enjoy fish now! (Or at least mahi and snapper.) I think I will leave crabcake and oysters to others, however. I ate them tonight, but did not enjoy them.

  • Day 77 – Fourth day in South Carolina

    ,

The photo above is the walkway to the beach from the hotel. Click on it to view it large.

The weather today was beautiful. We spent all morning at the Boone Plantation, and then spent the afternoon on the beach.

  • Day 37 – Baw Beese Lake at Night

    ,

David Wagner and I went to Baw Beese Lake tonight to walk around and take photos. He has never seen me to long exposures or light graffiti before, so I demonstrated with a few different shots. In a few of the shots we were walking around on the frozen lake.

Click the photos to view them larger. I recommend this to see all of the detail. Once you click on one, use your arrow keys or click on the right side of the photo to navigate to another one.

  • Day 35 – More Ice Sculpting

    ,

Here is another photo of the ice sculpting from the weekend. Click the photo to view it larger.

The gallery from South Haven is now posted! Check it out! (It has four pages…make sure you look at all four!)

I have spent the evening so far finishing Don Quixote, working on math, working on econ, and now I am going to work on the weekly “Question to Think About” from Dr. Jackson. I am also planning my schedule for the weekend and next week, since I have a paper to write, two exams to study for, a play to read, and events to photograph. I will be busy!

  • Day 33 – Portraits & Candids

    ,

In South Haven over the weekend, I made a special point to work on my portrait and candid shots of people. This is an area where I had a great deal of difficulty in the past. I have a long way to go, but I think I am making progress. The photos above are some of the outcomes of practice on Saturday. Click on the photos to view them larger. Once you click one, you can navigate to the other three. Hover over the photos (once large) to see how.

The gallery will be posted on Wednesday. I made it and it is already uploaded, but I have a few more photos I want to display on the front page before I show all of them.

  • Day 31 – South Haven, MI

    ,

South Pier Lighthouse, South Haven, MI. Click the photo to view it larger.

Today, my friends David, Hannah, Bethany, and I drove two and a half hours west to South Haven, MI. Our original intention was to photograph the lighthouse there and then explore the town, but when we arrived, we found a pleasant surprise. The town was hosting an ice sculpture contest in the main downtown area! It was spectacular. Many restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops were open because all of the tourists (like us), and the town was very lively despite the cold weather. It was a beautiful, sunny day, which was excellent. Hannah (who is also a photographer) and I took a couple hundred photos around town and around the lighthouse. After enduring the piercing wind while out walking on the ice, we found a chocolate shop that serves hot dark chocolate. It was delicious!

I will post more photos from the trip in the coming days. I will then post a full gallery. Stay tuned!

More on what I did yesterday, since I did not include it with yesterday’s update:

I woke up at 7 after sleeping only three and a half hours. I read a few chapters in Don Quixote and then went to Poly-Econ with Dr. Wolfram at 9, then Calc II with Dr. Treloar. After class, I spent an hour taking to Dr. Jackson about Don Quixote, photography, and life in general. Dr. Jackson is so friendly. I really like him. I then went to lunch and Dr. Birzer’s American Heritage class, after which I worked at ITS for two hours.

The Honors Program hosted a dinner at College Baptist and Dr. Birzer’s family joined us and Dr. Birzer gave a lecture on Charles Carroll of Carrollton. After dinner, I went to a CLO (Classical Liberal Organization) meeting and discussed the upcoming lectures we are hosting and movies we want to show. I am pretty excited for this new club. We all agreed to do a few lectures for weekly meetings, so the first one I am going to do is on Seasteading. The date is TBA.

  • Day 18 – Thespian Statue

    ,

Walking around downtown Jonesville yesterday in the wind and snow, I spotted this interesting statue. An icicle naturally formed on its face. Click the photo to view it large.

    50mm, f/2.8, 1/1000, ISO 100.

  • Day 6 – Long Exposures in Oberlin

    ,

Last night around 8:30, I decided to drive down to Oberlin and take a few long exposures. This is kind of new ground for me since the only type of long exposures I have done are the Illum light art photos. Even though it was pretty cold and kind of windy, I stayed out for almost three hours. Here are two of the multiple shots that I took. (Click on the photos to view larger.)

The top photo is a shot of trees with red berries and lights in them with cars driving by on the edge of SR 58. The bottom photo is a zoom-shot of the Apollo Theatre’s neon sign. This is the first time I have tried zooming during a long exposure. I just opened the shutter, waited a second, zoomed, waited a second, zoomed, etc. I believe I did this 8 times. I am pleased with how it came out, since I have never done that before. There is definitely some room for improvement, though. In the future I am going to do some tests to see if I can work that into light graffiti. I have a few ideas of what I can do.
