  • I haven’t tied much in the past three weeks because of other projects and travel, but I’m back at it. I noticed some small blue quills on the river today, so I tied some blue quill dries, emergers, and flymphs, all size 16. Eager to try them out tomorrow.

  • New project: Learning how to use QGIS.

  • First time using the Shopsmith Speed Reducer to turn below 700 RPM. Took me six months to find one for a reasonable price. Very handy for roughing out big stock without the machine jumping all over the place.

  • I wanted to tie some Hare’s Ear and Plover, but plover is a bit hard to come by these days. I think the barring on hen pheasant makes a good substitute.

  • Worse than a rickroll: Clicking a link on Twitter and it going to LinkedIn.

  • I have a new weather station set up! Will set up data syndication next week. For now, you can view it here: https://cagrimmett.com/weather/

  • I call this the Peacock & Purple.

    • Hook: Size 12 Czech nymph
    • Thread: White GSP, 100 Denier, colored with a purple marker
    • Rib: Purple floss
    • Body: Peacock herl
    • Hackle: Hen pheasant
  • I asked Eric Davis about the difference between bsky.app and bsky.social and why a single login works in both places. His answer:

so your Personal Data Server (PDS) is hosted by Bluesky (the company) at bsky.social(*)

when you log into bsky.app you’re actually firing off a request to bsky.social to authenticate (check devtools, it should be visible)

bsky.app is the main client of bluesky, but there are others like https://skeetdeck.pages.dev/ and some mobile apps. But bsky.app is not privileged, they all work the same — by talking directly to your PDS.

(*) technically bsky.social is the “entryway” to a fleet of individual PDS servers created as a convenience (https://docs.bsky.app/docs/advanced-guides/entryway) but not important here. But if you ever see “mushroom servers” mentioned, those are the individual PDS servers. There are 66 right now, each around 500k users.

every PDS in operation has a default domain and new user registrations become a subdomain of it — hence why most everybody is “NAME.bsky.social”

    TIL!

The part about A and eggs cracked me up. I had to show Amanda.

Charlie is in the same boat re: eggs. Butter, too. He loves when butter is in something, but he can’t see us put it in, or he will refuse to eat it.

We’re going to try the JD Biscuit Rollups the next time we go to the store.
