Microblog

  • I fixed about 181 broken images on old posts. I migrated the posts from old microblog, micro.cagrimmett.com, over to this site in 2020, but it looks like I missed some image src replacements.

    Two quick wp-cli commands later and those look much better.

    $ wp search-replace micro.cagrimmett.com cagrimmett.com
    $ wp cache flush
  • Taylor Swift? Back in my day we called her Taylor Objective-C.

  • Idea from my Dad: Make firestarters using sawdust, sticks, and wax in something like small paper cups. Old candles or a brick of Gulf Wax works well. You can add some lamp oil or citronella to the sawdust before pouring in the melted wax to make them burn a little better.

  • With the proliferation of AI tools, it now seems weird and a limitation that you can’t ask Slackbot real questions.

  • We need a more advanced Query Loop block. I want to be able to use Group By to order my Likes and Notes so not every one needs the date next to it.

  • Having a bit of fun. Playing around with Arc Browser’s Boosts to try a FeedLand Dark Mode. https://arc.net/boost/B3857C94-AA7F-4FC3-9FE2-98104E93DE1E

  • One fun, silly thing Amanda and I do sometimes is text the other around lunch time pretending to be a waiter/waitress at a restaurant, and explain today’s lunch entrees with what sides are available for them, and what timeslots we have reservations available today. If they ask for customizations or substitutions, we relay that message to the chef and note that they’ll do their best to accommodate. Then we prepare the lunch and deliver it very seriously.

    Today’s specials:

    Hot ham and cheese sandwiches with your choice of tomato soup, simple greens salad, or potato chips as a side. The dining room opens at 1:15pm. The chef has a call and will not be in until 1.

    You do what you can to make work from home fun.

  • Feeling behind this morning. The day started off well: Up early, everything aligned and we got out the door on time. Then when we got to daycare I realized I had forgot Charlie’s gloves, which he needs. They play outside every day and it is cold today. So we drove back home and got the gloves, but there was a front-end loader and dump truck working on the street, and for a toddler who loves construction equipment, I’d be a monster not to let him watch.

    I got back home after dropoff around two to a flurry of time-sensitive messages. Now I’m behind.

    Some days are like that.

  • TIL “laser” is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. I learned this in a children’s book I was reading to Charlie. I guess this is common knowledge, and today I’m one of the lucky 10,000.

  • More Arc features I found today that I like:

    • If you click a link in a pinned tab, it shows you a preview in a lightbox instead of automatically opening that link. (Links in unpinned tabs work exactly as you’d expect).
    • Command + Shift + C copies the current URL, and they try to strip tracking info off.
    • Air Traffic Control lets you decide which space a link opens in. For example, all WordPress.com URLs now open for me in my Automattic space.
  • What the heck are these ads on the NYTimes Cooking weekly email?

  • I’ve never said or written the word “tarpaulin” (until this post). I’ve only ever heard or said “tarp.” The only place I’ve ever seen “tarpaulin” is in books. I had to look it up the first time I read it because I had no idea that the shortened version is “tarp.”

  • It looks like my parents will be in the path of totality for the April 8, 2024, eclipse. We might need to take a road trip! https://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/

  • I usually say I started blogging in 2008, but that is just when I started on my own domain. I had a GeoCities, Xanga, and LiveJournal before then.

  • I made a bottle of this Black Christmas last December and only drank half of it, but kept the other half in the fridge for the past year. Decided to have some tonight and it is smoother and more complex after aging.

  • Thinking about self hosting this to turn newsletters into RSS feeds.

    I could also take Chris Hardie’s approach and use WordPress for this.

    Some hosted alternatives:

  • The V-seal weather stripping I put up over the weekend fell off sometime overnight 🤦‍♂️

    I guess I’ll go with the weatherseal tape again. It doesn’t look as nice, but it works.
