  • Ugh, looks like my Twitter blocks and keyword mutes no longer work. Why do I even use that app?

  • Trying my hand at tying flies. Here are my first two, with brown rooster hackle and brown sewing thread. Trying to get the basics down: Keeping tension while wrapping, lashing on feathers, and whip finishing.

  • While playing Duplos with Charlie, I made a Marimekko house.

  • Organizing my jumbled mess of flies from five different containers.

  • Tonight’s drink is the Elusive Dreams. I infused the pineapple rum via sous vide, made the banana liqueur, and used cassia chips for the cinnamon syrup. Garnished with his & hers nasturtiums from the garden.

  • When I was younger I never read the local newspaper, preferring the NYT, WSJ, and FT. Now I’m the exact opposite. I always open and go through the weekly roundup email from the Peekskill Herald and mostly ignore the big newspapers.

  • Went out for BBQ tonight. I got Charlie some pulled chicken, but he surprised me and ate most of my brisket instead. I’m excited to have a little BBQ buddy!

  • Made some Haitian pikliz.

  • We made pizza sauce with our garden tomatoes.

  • The early makings of banana liqueur. Macerated banana with Demerara sugar in the bag to make banana syrup, peels with dark rum in the jar. Will strain and combine both in a couple days and dilute with water.

  • Hamilton Pot Still Black Rum is incredible in a Jungle Bird.

  • Unbelievably this is the first tiki drink we’ve made all summer. Jungle Bird.

  • Cooled from 90s to 60s, so having some Old Forester 1910 tonight. Feels like fall.

  • Currently reading:

    • Paradise (Expeditionary Force Book 3) by Craig Alanson (audio book)

    • The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne (ebook) – Multiple friends have mentioned this.
    • Going Postal by Terry Pratchett (ebook) – I’ve been wanting to try Discworld for a while!

  • I just queried my email archive for “unsubscribe”, then selected all and hit delete. YOLO.

    Update on my blogging break:

    • I’m also pretty much off of social media and not checking my feed readers right now.
    • During the work day I’m focusing on navigating a role change at work.
    • Outside of work I’m reading more books.
    • I thought I’d be spending more time outside than I have been, but it is hot and muggy right now.

  • TIL about Pineapple Weed, sometimes called wild chamomile, which until today I thought was just not fully bloomed chamomile. Pulled some out of my garden last night.

  • Finally, a break in the heatwave. I’m working from my laptop outside on the porch this morning for the first time in over a month. The cool breeze is so nice.
